PROPER HANDWASHING

Washing your hands is an effective way to prevent the spread of germs and infections. It's important to wash your hands after using the restroom, before eating, and after touching potentially dirty surfaces. Here is one technique for proper handwashing.

Wet your hands: Use clean, running water that's either warm or cold.

  1. Apply soap: Add enough soap to cover all surfaces of your hands and wrists.

  2. Lather: Rub your hands together to create a lather.

  3. Scrub: Scrub your hands for at least 30 seconds, making sure to get the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. You can hum the "Happy Birthday" song twice to help you time it.

  4. Rinse: Rinse your hands thoroughly under clean, running water.

  5. Dry: Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dryer. You can use the towel to turn off the faucet.

If you don't have soap and water, you can use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. However, hand sanitizers may not be as effective as soap and water, especially if your hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
